About:

The RSN Embroidery Studio team were honoured to work on nine pieces for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.  One of the Coronation pieces, designed and hand embroidered by the RSN, was the Robe of Estate of Her Majesty Queen Camilla who is patron of the RSN.  The Coronation Robe was made with a rich purple velvet and embroidered using the technique of Goldwork.

The Queen’s Robe of Estate was designed to represent Their Majesties love of nature and the environment.  There were a total of 24 plants featured on the Robe, all chosen for their personal associations, with wild flowers at the base of the robe, leading up to the four emblematic flowers of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Flowers included the Delphinium, one of The King’s favourite flowers and the birth flower of July, the birth month of The Queen; the ‘Alchemilla Mollis’, known as Lady’s Mantle, which symbolises love and comfort; Cornflowers, which help to attract and encourage wildlife such as bees and butterflies; Lily of the Valley, which featured in Her Majesty’s wedding bouquet and was a favourite flower of Queen Elizabeth II; Myrtle, which represents hope; and Oak leaves which symbolise strength and longevity. Scabiosa, known as pincushion flowers, is also featured on the Robe, which is a reference to the Royal School of Needlework’s connection with Her Majesty, and her dedicated support since she became Patron. For the first time, the Coronation Robe also featured insects including a bee, butterfly, snail and ladybird.

The kits have been worked onto purple cotton velvet using gold threads with each design having a flower and insect from the original design.

Forget-me-Not and Caterpillar Goldwork Embroidery Kit

Level: Intermediate

This delicate design uses the technique of combining colour with gold in the process of couching gold threads and the wrapping of Pearl Purl with purple stranded cotton before couching it down. The flowers use a combination of cut work and couching with long and short stitch in a delicate thread, all finished off with a spangle. The technique for the caterpillar gives a true sense of movement up the stem. The design is an intermediate level and some previous experience in Goldwork is recommended.
